Sea Shanties is an ever-changing strategy board game where players compete to be the most legendary pirate sailing the Kanvus Sea. To do so, players must plunder islands for precious resources, cleverly manage their crew, and pillage resources from other players in a unique sea-battle mechanic.
Game Lore
You enter a weather-worn building on an island somewhere in the far western reaches of the Kanvus Sea. The small tavern is crowded but the dark, damp air inside, although heavy with must, is a refuge from the sweltering sun currently baking the island's shore.
The tavern swells, bustling with privateers and buccaneers -- a missing eye, arm, or leg seems to be the fee of admittance to join this raucous crowd. The smell of brown enters your nostrils as you order a tankard of warm grog. With every sip, memories from your recent past slowly slip away...
That's when a stout bard with an aging accordion emerges from the corner. He brushes sand and dust from the instrument's bellows and as he begins to squeeze its sides, the familiar notes cut through the crowd and dance around your ears. He begins jovially singing a shanty that is well-known among all of the patrons. You slurp down the last drops of your grog and slam your tankard on the table.
Making your way towards the source of the music, you can't help but feel like the room full of salty sailors is watching your every move. The bard continues to sing of the Legendary Pirates of The Kanvus Sea. His soothing voice mixes with the punctuated melody from his accordion. It captivates you as you notice now that the other carousers in the tavern are singing along. You cannot help yourself from humming along to the tunes about the great pirates of the past.
A thought fueled by drink and existential crises enters your head as the crowd dives into the shanty's chorus. It may be too late to change your past, but you can still craft the legacy you leave behind...
You hurriedly gather your crew, recruit a few new sailors, and rush out to port. By the time you find yourself in Davy Jones’ Locker, The Kanvus Sea will sing of your name by praise or by fear!
… But you’re not the only one ready to weigh anchor.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - April 8, 2019 -- Pleiades Games, an emerging board game company based in Highland Park, New Jersey, has announced a funding campaign for their first publicly-released game, Sea Shanties. The company's Kickstarter campaign for Sea Shanties will run from March 28, 2019, until May 16, 2019.
Sea Shanties is a pirate-themed game that promises to immerse players in a unique gameplay experience as they "pillage, plunder, and pilfer [their] way to be the most renown captain" on the Kanvus Sea. Designed for 3-5 players, participants must strategically plan their moves across a randomized game board -- inhabiting islands, collecting loot, and battling each other -- while trying to collect Verses and Ballads to build their "shanty" and collect the most Renown Points.
"I've been working hard to bring the world a game that is immersive, complex, and all around fun," says Sea Shanties designer, Andrew X. Hunter. "After two years of changes, hundreds of hours of play-testing, and much valuable feedback, I feel that this game has landed on an experience that is unlike any other board game."
In addition to its unique gameplay experience, Sea Shanties also promotes itself as an eco-friendly game. The pieces that make up the playing surface (map) are strategically made out of a canvas, the playing pieces are wooden, and an effort has been made to reduce the amount of plastic used in production and packaging.
"It can be easy to take a more cost-efficient route and utilize plastic pieces," says Hunter. "We didn't just want to do things easily, we wanted to do them right. But a startup can only do so much. That's why we're hoping to reach our funding stretch goals of $7,500 and $15,000 -- so we can swap out the majority of our cardboard pieces and box, and make them out of real wood."
Sea Shanties will enter production this summer and will be delivered to Kickstarter backers in August 2019 as long as it reaches its initial funding goal of $2,500.
